Chapter 8: An Unexpected Encounter

Six months later, my pregnancy was nearing its final term. My belly was beautifully round, and my spirit was more peaceful than it had ever been in my life.
I decided to take an unannounced visit to one of our foundation's rural community kitchens in western Pennsylvania. I wanted to see the impact firsthand without the local management staging a show for the 'heiress.'
Dressed in a simple wool sweater and flat boots, I walked into the bustling kitchen where hundreds of hot meals were being prepared for local families affected by recent factory closures.
Near the industrial dishwashers, steam rising into the air, a man with calloused, red hands was scrubbing heavy cast-iron pots. He moved with a mechanical, exhausted rhythm, head down, wearing a stained apron.
He dropped a pot, and as he bent down to pick it up, his eyes met mine.
It was Tyler.
He froze. The arrogance that had once defined him was completely gone. His face was weathered, his hands were scarred from burns, and his shoulders were hunched in profound shame.
He didn't run. He didn't beg. He simply stood there, staring at the floor, trembling.
May you like
"Elena," he whispered, barely audible over the clatter of the kitchen.
