Chapter 13: An Act of True Courage

As Tyler reached the dry embankment and helped the woman into an ambulance, a sharp scream pierced through the roaring sound of rushing water.
Fifty yards downstream, a makeshift wooden walkway had collapsed under the current. A seven-year-old girl was clinging to a submerged fence post, the swirling river threatening to pull her into the main culvert.
The local rescue workers were busy securing the main generator. Nobody was close enough—except Tyler.
Without hesitating for a single second, without looking around to see if anyone was watching, Tyler dove back into the brown, freezing torrent.
He fought against the violent current, his arms slicing through the debris-filled water. He reached the child just as her grip slipped, pulling her small body onto his chest.
"I've got you!" he shouted over the roar of the river. "Hold on to me!"
Using his own body as a shield against floating logs and metal wreckage, Tyler pushed himself toward the safety line stretched across the embankment. When he finally shoved the girl into the outstretched arms of the paramedics, a heavy wooden beam struck him across the shoulder, dragging him under.
"Tyler!" I screamed, running toward the riverbank.

Two rescue divers jumped in, pulling his unconscious, bruised body from the water just seconds before he was swept into the drain pipe.
