Chapter 9

The heavy clatter of the grandfather clock chiming twelve times echoed through the open glass doors, marking the absolute expiration of their stolen time. The final note vibrated through the stone terrace, hanging in the crisp autumn air like a sentence handed down by an indifferent universe. Mateo raised his head, his eyes locked onto the horizon where the gray sky met the tree line. The grace period had ended; the reality of their displacement was no longer a future threat, but an immediate present.

Inside the salon, the muffled footsteps of Sterling and his associates signaled their return. Mateo didn't turn around. He kept his focus entirely fixed on Elena. Her eyes were closed, her breathing shallow and agonizingly slow. The white dress seemed to swallow her slight frame, and the pearls around her neck rested against skin that had grown translucently pale. Yet, a serene, untroubled smile graced her lips.

Sofia shifted slightly, her golden dress rustling against the stone. She leaned in close, pressing a tender kiss to Elena’s forehead. "It's time, my sweet girl," Sofia whispered, her voice remarkably steady, carrying the weight of a profound, shattering acceptance. Elena opened her eyes slowly, gazing up at her parents with an expression of pure, unadulterated love.

"I'm not afraid," Elena murmured, her voice barely audible over the wind rustling the dead leaves in the garden below. "I'll be waiting where the light is warm." The words sent a fresh wave of agony crashing through Mateo’s chest, yet they also anchored him. He squeezed her small hands with a desperate intensity, as if sheer physical force could anchor her spirit to the earth.

Heavy footsteps approached the threshold of the terrace. Sterling stood at the doorway, hesitating when he saw the tableau before him. The cold, calculating corporate representative was momentarily stripped away, replaced by a man witnessing a tragedy too sacred to interrupt. Sterling raised a hand, silently signaling his men to halt inside the salon. He did not speak, offering them the only courtesy left within his power: dignity in the final second.

Mateo pulled Elena gently toward his chest, burying his face in her soft hair, while Sofia wrapped her arms around both of them, forming an impenetrable cocoon of love. A sudden, brilliant beam of sunlight broke through the heavy gray clouds overhead, bathing the terrace in a warm, golden illumination that seemed to defy the season. Elena let out a long, peaceful sigh, her small hands gently relaxing within Mateo’s grip. The world around them faded into absolute silence, a profound stillness that marked not an end, but a transition into eternal peace.
