Chapter 6

The gray light of dawn crept mercilessly through the towering windows of the grand salon, exposing the dust motes dancing in the cold air and stripping away the protective illusions of the night. Mateo awoke from a brief, exhausted slumber still kneeling on the marble floor. His joints ached with a sharp, stabbing intensity, but he ignored the pain. His immediate instinct was to check his grip; his hands were still loosely entwined with Elena’s. She was still there, breathing softly, her pale face catching the pale morning light like alabaster.

Sofia stirred beside him, her golden dress slightly rumpled from their unconventional night on the floor. She blinked against the harsh morning illumination, her wavy brown hair falling messily across her forehead. Realization flooded her features as the events of the previous evening rushed back into her consciousness. She didn't panic. Instead, she offered Mateo a tired, reassuring smile, reaching out to brush a lock of hair from his damp brow.

"The sun is up," Sofia whispered, her voice rough with fatigue. The practical implications of that sunrise loomed large. By noon, the legal representatives of the bank would arrive to claim the estate. Their belongings, their memories, and the very roof over their heads would be forfeited to settle debts incurred by Mateo’s desperate, failed efforts to save Elena’s life. Yet, as Mateo looked at his daughter, worldly possessions felt like dust.

Elena opened her eyes slowly, blinking away sleep. Her gaze met Mateo’s with absolute clarity. "Good morning, Dad," she murmured, her voice remarkably strong for a moment, though the underlying fragility remained unmistakable. She looked down at their joined hands, a gentle contentment settling over her features. "Can we sit by the window today? I want to see the garden one last time."

Mateo felt a sharp pang in his chest, but he nodded without hesitation. "Anything you want, my love," he replied, his voice breaking slightly. With agonizing care, Mateo and Sofia helped Elena to her feet. The white dress swayed around her ankles like seafoam as they moved slowly toward the massive glass doors leading to the rear terrace. Every step was a delicate negotiation with gravity and fading strength, but Elena refused wheelchair or assistance beyond their guiding hands.

As they stepped out onto the stone patio, the crisp morning air hit their faces. Below them stretched the overgrown, once-magnificent gardens, heavy with dew and autumn frost. Elena drew a deep breath, her eyes widening at the vast expanse of the gray sky meeting the distant tree line. She looked at peace, a tiny monarch surveying a kingdom she was voluntarily releasing to the wind. Mateo and Sofia flanked her closely, their hands never letting go, forming a human barrier against the cold reality waiting for them inside the house.
