Chapter 10

The sunlight on the terrace faded as quickly as it had arrived, swallowed once more by the heavy gray canopy of the autumn sky. The silence that settled over the grand salon was absolute, heavier and more suffocating than any quiet they had experienced before. Mateo remained kneeling on the stone, his arms still curved into the empty space where his daughter had rested just moments prior. His fingers remained slightly arched, as if still holding onto the fragile warmth of her small hands.

Sofia knelt beside him, her golden dress pooling on the cold floor like melted sorrow. She did not scream, nor did she weep hysterically. Instead, she reached out with trembling fingers and gently closed Mateo’s empty hands, resting them against his chest right over his racing heart. The physical gesture was an anchor, pulling him back from the precipice of absolute detachment where his shattered mind threatened to wander.

From the doorway, Sterling lowered his head, turning his back on the scene to afford the grieving parents a shred of privacy. His associates retreated silently into the shadows of the foyer. The legal battle, the financial ruin, and the forced eviction suddenly felt trivial, reduced to meaningless ink on paper in the face of this ultimate loss. The house was no longer a home; it was a mausoleum of memories that Mateo and Sofia would now have to leave behind.

Mateo finally drew a ragged, shuddering breath, his shoulders shaking as the dam broke and silent tears streamed down his face. "She’s gone, Sofia," he choked out, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. He felt as though his chest had been hollowed out, leaving an abyss where his heart used to beat.

Sofia leaned her head against his shoulder, her own tears soaking through the fabric of his black suit. "She is free now, Mateo," Sofia whispered back, her voice barely a breath, yet it carried an immovable strength. "She fought for us, and now we must honor her by surviving." The truth in her words was a bitter pill, but it was the only nourishment they had left.

Slowly, painfully, Mateo stood up. His knees protested stiffly, but he forced himself upright, offering his hand to Sofia. She took it, rising gracefully despite the crushing weight of their shared grief. They stood together for one last moment in the center of the terrace, looking out over the desolate garden where the wind whispered through the barren trees. Without looking back at the luxurious prison they were leaving behind, Mateo and Sofia turned their backs on the grand salon and walked slowly toward the uncertain, terrifying void of the world waiting beyond the gates.
