Chapter 8

As Sterling and his associate retreated toward the foyer, their footsteps fading into the distance, Mateo exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. He turned back toward the terrace, where Sofia and Elena stood framed by the vast, open sky. The crisp autumn wind ruffled Elena’s brown hair, causing the white headband to slip slightly. Mateo crossed the threshold quickly, rejoining them in their secluded sanctuary, eager to wash away the taint of corporate greed with the purity of their presence.

Sofia looked up as he approached, reading the silent confirmation in his posture. "They gave us until noon?" she asked softly. Mateo nodded, gently taking Elena’s hand once more. The physical contact acted as an immediate antidote to the toxic encounter inside. Elena looked up at him, her innocent eyes holding an unsettling depth of comprehension.

"You don't have to fight them anymore, Dad," Elena said, her voice a soothing balm over his frayed nerves. "We have everything we need right here." She gestured vaguely toward the sprawling, neglected garden below. The vibrant reds and golds of autumn leaves painted the landscape in a melancholy beauty that mirrored their own emotional state.

Mateo knelt down once more on the cold stone of the terrace, bringing himself down to Elena’s eye level. He pulled her slightly closer, feeling the delicate framework of her bones beneath the elegant white dress. "I will fight for you until my last breath, my dear daughter," Mateo whispered, his voice cracking with a fierce, protective love that defied all logic and circumstance. Sofia knelt beside them, completing the sacred circle, her golden dress pooling on the stone like molten sunlight.

For the next two hours, the outside world ceased to exist. They didn't speak of banks, debts, or medical diagnoses. Instead, they shared whispered memories of happier times—summer picnics by the lake, clumsy attempts at baking in the sprawling estate kitchen, and quiet rainy afternoons spent reading stories by the fireplace. Each memory was a brick laid in a spiritual fortress that no foreclosure could ever dismantle.

The sun climbed higher into the gray sky, slowly warming the stone beneath their knees. Elena leaned her head against Mateo’s shoulder, her breathing becoming perceptibly lighter, almost ethereal. Sofia pressed her hand over theirs, her eyes bright with unshed tears. They were standing at the edge of an insurmountable precipice, yet they fell into it together, holding hands with a courage that put the entire world to shame. The clock inside the grand salon ticked relentlessly toward noon, counting down the final moments of an era, but within their embrace, time stood entirely still.
