Chapter 3

As the daylight surrendered to the encroaching shadows, the grand salon transformed. The amber chandelier overhead flickered once, casting dancing shadows across the high ceilings and illuminating the fine dust particles suspended in the air. Mateo finally released one of Elena’s hands, using his freed fingers to gently wipe away a stray tear that had traced a path down her cheek. The gesture was agonizingly tender, performed with the care one might bestow upon a fragile porcelain heirloom destined to break at the slightest pressure.

Elena closed her eyes for a brief second, leaning slightly into the touch. "It’s getting dark, isn't it?" she asked, her voice maintaining an eerie calmness that tore at Mateo’s sanity. She wasn't speaking of the sunset; she was referencing the encroaching night of her own fading vitality. Mateo felt a cold dread pool in his stomach. He had spent his entire professional life negotiating high-stakes contracts, anticipating threats, and neutralizing dangers before they could materialize. Yet, against this ultimate adversary, all his wealth, intelligence, and influence were entirely useless.

Sofia shifted closer, wrapping her arms around Mateo’s waist from behind, pressing her forehead against his broad back. Her golden dress rustled softly in the quiet room. "We are right here with you, my love," Sofia whispered, her voice steadying through sheer force of will. She refused to let despair claim the final moments they had left. She reached out, taking Elena’s other hand, creating a unbroken circle of three—a fortress of love built to withstand the howling winds of loss.

Mateo looked down at their intertwined hands, the focal point of their shared existence. The pearls around Elena’s neck caught a stray beam of moonlight cutting through the tall window, glowing with a soft, ethereal luster. He remembered the day they bought that dress, the bright afternoon when Elena laughed and twirled in the boutique, completely unaware of the shadow looming just over the horizon. He had bought her the world then, believing money could buy safety. Now, he understood the bitter irony of his delusion.

The silence returned, heavy and profound, broken only by the synchronized breathing of the three souls anchored to the center of the room. They weren't just mourning an impending end; they were actively resisting the oblivion that threatened to tear them apart. Mateo drew a deep, shuddering breath, filling his lungs with the scent of lavender and old paper that always clung to Elena. In that frozen moment, time lost its authority. They existed only in the space between heartbeats, suspended in a reality defined entirely by unconditional love.
