Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

Gabriel immediately motioned for Evelyn to take Clara into the reinforced utility room at the back of the facility. He drew a suppressed pistol from beneath his jacket, checking the slide with smooth, practiced precision.
Outside, the crunch of gravel beneath heavy tires signaled the arrival of three black sedans.
Marco had found them.
Through the narrow slit of a boarded-up window, Gabriel observed the men disembarking. Eight armed mercenaries in tactical gear, led by Marco himself. Marco was carrying a heavy automatic rifle, his face tense and anxious.
“Spread out! Check every entrance!” Marco barked to his men. “Salvatore wants no loose ends. If the girl is breathing, finish it. If Gabriel resists, put him in the ground next to her.”
Gabriel stood in the shadows, his pulse remarkably steady. In the past, he would have called in his own strike teams, turning the street into a bloodbath of territorial revenge. But looking back at the steel door where his daughter hid, he realized vengeance was a trap.
Survival and justice were the only things that mattered.

He pulled a small handheld detonator from his pocket—a failsafe he had installed when setting up the safehouse months ago. He wasn't going to fight a prolonged war. He was going to cut the head off the snake and disappear into the mist.
