Chapter 11: The Clean Escape
Gabriel didn't wait for the flashing red and blue lights to illuminate the street.
Through an underground drainage tunnel that led directly to the river marina, Gabriel, Evelyn, Clara, and Bruno moved swiftly through the shadows. A modest, unmarked fishing trawler sat humming at the private dock.
As they boarded the vessel, the distant sound of tactical squads breaching the warehouse confirmed that the law had finally caught up with Marco and Salvatore’s crumbling empire.
Evelyn stood on the wooden pier, refusing Gabriel’s offer to board.
“You’re not coming with us?” Gabriel asked, holding Clara close.
Evelyn smiled warmly, shaking her head. “My place is here, treating the people who have nowhere else to go. Besides, the feds know I’m just an ER doctor. You, on the other hand, need to be someone completely new.”
She reached down and patted Bruno’s head, the dog licking her hand in gentle gratitude.
“Take care of her, Gabriel. Give her the life she almost lost.”
“Thank you, Evelyn. For everything.”
