Chapter 4: The Poisoned Cup

The hours dragged into the dead of night. Outside, the storm raged, wind howling through the cracked vents of the warehouse roof.
Clara stirred with a soft, ragged gasp. Her small fingers curled weakly, clutching the linen sheet. Bruno let out a muffled whine, rising on his forepaws to gently nudge her cheek with his wet nose.
“Bruno...?” Clara’s voice was barely a thread of sound, dry and cracked.
Gabriel fell to his knees beside the bed, catching her small hand between both of his. “Clara. Look at me, sweetheart. Look at Daddy.”
Her hazel eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused before slowly locking onto Gabriel’s face. A tear slipped down her pale cheek.
“Daddy... it was dark,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “The box was so dark.”
“It’s over now. You’re in the light,” Gabriel choked out, kissing her knuckles. “You’re safe. Bruno found you.”
Clara weakly turned her head toward the dog, who pressed his snout into her open palm. “Marco gave me hot chocolate... before I went to sleep,” she murmured, her memories slowly piecing together through the chemical fog. “He told me not to tell you. He said it was our secret game.”
The air left Gabriel’s lungs. A blinding rage threatened to consume him, but as he felt Clara’s fragile heartbeat pulsing against his palms, the anger melted into a profound, chilling clarity.
