Chapter 5: The Cost of an Empire

Evelyn handed Gabriel a cup of black coffee as Clara drifted back into a natural, healing sleep under the warmth of heavy blankets.
“She’s going to survive, Gabriel,” Evelyn said softly, leaning against the counter. “Her neurological responses are intact. But she needs a hospital, specialized rehabilitation, and most importantly, a life far away from this nightmare.”
Gabriel stared out the dusty window at the gray dawn creeping over the industrial skyline. For fifteen years, he had climbed the ranks of the city’s most ruthless crime syndicate. He had justified every sin, every extortion, and every violent retaliation with the same hollow lie: *I am doing this to build a fortress for my child.*
Yet that very fortress had become a tomb.
“I thought fear kept people loyal,” Gabriel muttered, watching his own reflection in the grimy glass.
“Fear breeds resentment,” Evelyn replied honestly. “Marco didn't turn on you because he hated Clara. He turned on you because he knew killing your daughter would break you, leaving the syndicate open for Salvatore to claim. In your world, love isn't a strength—it's a hostage.”
Bruno stood up, stretching his muscular frame, before walking over and resting his head heavily on Gabriel’s knee. Gabriel stroked the dog’s velvet ears.
“I’m done,” Gabriel said quietly.
“Done with what?”

“All of it. I’m pulling down the pillars. And when the dust settles, there will be nothing left for them to fight over.”
