Chapter 7: Confrontation at Sunrise**

At 7:00 AM, two unmarked police cruisers and a squad car pulled up the winding gravel driveway of Blackwood Manor. Detective Marcus Vance—Julian’s estranged cousin and a tenured investigator with the city’s major crimes unit—stepped out into the morning mist.

Julian met Marcus at the grand double doors. The two men exchanged a brief, understanding nod before walking upstairs toward the guest suite where Evelyn remained confined under private security.

Julian unlocked the door and pushed it open.

Evelyn was sitting on the chaise lounge, still wearing her gold gown, though it now looked wrinkled and disheveled. Her mascara was slightly smudged, but her chin remained defiantly lifted.

“Julian, darling,” she said with theatrical sigh. “I assume you’ve come to your senses. We have a press conference for the charity gala at noon, and this little tantrum is getting tedious.”

Detective Marcus stepped into the room, flashing his badge. “Evelyn Sterling, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and attempted fraudulent conservatorship.”

Evelyn’s face hardened. She stood up, smoothing her gold skirt. “Do you know who my father is, officer? This is a civil misunderstanding between domestic partners. Julian, tell him to leave.”

Julian looked at her with pure detachment. “The board held an emergency meeting thirty minutes ago, Evelyn. Your father was removed from his position after we disclosed the insolvency filings. Your family owns nothing here.”

Her veneer shattered completely. “You ungrateful coward! I was going to give you a real family! I was going to elevate your name! That weak, sniveling child of yours is a parasite holding you back!”

“The only parasite here,” Julian replied quietly, “is the woman who mistook money for humanity.”

Marcus snapped the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. As she was led down the stairs, screaming curses into the echoing hall, the entire household staff stood in the foyer, watching the golden facade crumble to dust.
