Chapter 6: The Paper Trail**
Julian didn't sleep that night. He spent the remaining hours until dawn locked in his study with Arthur Pendelton, his family’s veteran attorney, who had arrived at 4:00 AM after a single urgent phone call.
Pendelton, a silver-haired man with sharp spectacles, spread a thick dossier across Julian’s desk.
“Julian, what you’re dealing with goes far beyond domestic cruelty,” Pendelton said gravely, tapping a series of financial statements. “Evelyn Sterling’s father isn't backing her out of familial affection. The Sterling hedge fund is insolvent. They lost nearly four hundred million dollars in bad offshore derivatives last quarter.”
Julian rubbed his tired eyes. “They needed the Vance merger to stay afloat.”
“Worse than that,” Pendelton continued, sliding a legal document forward. “Evelyn insisted on the prenuptial clause regarding the Vance Family Trust. If you marry her, and should anything happen to Leo, the entire primary inheritance—including your late wife’s estate—transfers entirely to your surviving spouse.”
Julian’s blood ran cold. The image of his son trapped in the suffocating dark of the wall flashed before his eyes. It was never about a timeout before a dinner party. It was a calculated, escalating pattern intended to drive the boy into institutionalization or worse, clearing the path to billions.
“She was terrorizing him to establish a history of psychological instability,” Julian realized aloud, nausea rising in his throat.
“Precisely,” Pendelton nodded. “She already consulted two private psychiatric clinics last week under your name, claiming Leo was prone to dangerous hallucinations and self-harm. She was laying the groundwork to have him permanently committed the moment the wedding rings were on your fingers.”
