Chapter 14: A Promise Kept**
Maria opened the folder. Inside was a legal deed for a newly established nonprofit organization: *The Leo Vance Foundation for Child Advocacy and Protection.*
Attached to the foundation charter was a corporate resolution naming Maria Santos as the Executive Director, backed by a permanent, fully funded endowment of fifty million dollars.
Maria’s eyes filled with tears as she read the words. “Mr. Vance... I don’t know how to run a foundation. I’m just a housekeeper.”
Julian shook his head, his eyes shining with deep emotion. “You were never ‘just’ a housekeeper, Maria. You were the only person in this house with the eyes to see cruelty and the courage to stop it. You saved my son’s life when all my money and power were completely useless.”
Julian leaned forward, his voice steady and sincere. “This foundation will provide legal defense, safe housing, and emotional therapy for neglected and abused children across the state. No child should ever feel trapped in the dark. And there is no one on this earth I trust more to lead that mission than you.”
Leo set down his paintbrush, walked over to Maria, and wrapped his small arms around her waist. “Please say yes, Maria. You’re my family.”
Maria buried her face in Leo’s dark hair, weeping tears of pure relief and joy. “Yes,” she whispered, hugging the boy tightly. “I will do it. I promise.”
