Chapter 11: The Witness**
With the forensic evidence secured, the criminal case against Evelyn Sterling transformed into an unassailable indictment for aggravated kidnapping, corporate fraud, and conspiracy. Richard Sterling’s legal team immediately attempted to negotiate a plea deal, but Julian refused every offer. He demanded a full, public trial.
However, the key witness remained Maria Santos.
The day before her scheduled deposition, two men in expensive suits approached Maria outside the modest apartment building where she lived with her elderly mother. They offered her a cashier's check for two million dollars and a one-way first-class ticket out of the country—on the condition that she recant her statement and fail to appear in court.
Maria stared at the check. The amount of money was staggering; it could buy her family financial security for three generations.
“All you have to do is say you were confused about what you saw in the wall,” the man in the charcoal suit smiled smoothly. “Think about your family, Miss Santos.”
Maria looked at the check, then looked up into the man’s smug face. She slowly tore the paper in half, then tore it again into quarters, letting the scraps fall onto the wet sidewalk.
“Tell Mr. Sterling that my dignity isn't for sale,” Maria said with quiet fury. “And tell his daughter that I will be in that courtroom tomorrow morning, looking her straight in the eye.”
