Chapter 6: The Pulse of Room 404

Adam approached the reinforced door. His reflection in the observation window looked hollowed out, but behind the glass lay the truth he had been denied for a thousand days.
He swiped the master key. The heavy magnetic bolt hissed open with a release of pressurized air.
The room was freezing. In the center sat a mechanical hospital bed surrounded by humming IV pumps, vital sign monitors, and clear nutrient bags dripping at a calculated, sluggish rate.
Elena lay under a thin white thermal blanket.
Her once vibrant auburn hair was pale and thin, splayed out across the pillow like dried leaves. Her skin was nearly translucent, showing the faint blue veins along her temples. Yet, on the monitor overhead, a steady green line rose and fell.
*Beep. Beep. Beep.*
Adam dropped to his knees beside the bed. His hands trembled uncontrollably as he reached out, hovering for a moment before gently pressing his warm palm against her cheek.
She was cold, but she was alive.
"Elena..." he whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking through the stubble on his cheek. "Elena, I'm here. It's Adam."
Her eyelids fluttered slightly beneath the sedation, a tiny twitch of recognition responding to the voice she hadn't heard in years. An IV drip near her forearm was labeled with a strong synthetic neuro-sedative designed to induce prolonged medical comas.
Adam reached up and clicked the safety valve shut, cutting the flow of poison immediately.

"I'm taking you home," he murmured, gently unhooking the monitor leads from her chest. "Lily is waiting in the car."
