Chapter 13: The Awakening

Three weeks later, the sterile terror of St. Jude’s had been replaced by the quiet, sun-drenched private suite of Harborview Memorial Hospital.

Elena sat upright in bed, propped by pillows. Her color had returned, a healthy rose blooming on her cheeks, though she was still regaining her physical strength through daily physical therapy.

The door opened softly, and Lily peered inside, carrying a small sketchbook filled with vibrant drawings of gardens, oceans, and three stick figures holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

"Mommy?"

Elena’s face broke into a radiant, tearful smile. She opened her arms wide. "Come here, my brave girl."

Lily ran across the room and clambered gently onto the bed, burying her head against Elena's chest. Elena buried her face in her daughter’s hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and childhood, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated relief.

"I remembered your voice," Elena whispered, her voice growing stronger with each passing day. "Even when they put me in the dark, every time you sang that lullaby in my dreams, I fought to keep breathing."

Adam walked in behind Lily, carrying a fresh bouquet of white hydrangeas—Elena’s favorite flowers.

He set them on the windowsill where the morning sun poured across the polished oak floor, illuminating the room with golden warmth.

Elena looked up at her husband, extending her hand. Adam took it, intertwining his fingers with hers, feeling the steady, undeniable warmth of her pulse.
