Chapter 10: The Locket’s Light

Before Victoria could reach inside her purse, the SUV’s rear door cracked open.

Lily stepped out into the rain, her small boots splashing in the gravel. She held the silver locket firmly in both hands, her eyes fixed entirely on Victoria.

"You told me Mommy went to the stars," Lily said, her voice carrying a profound, heartbreaking clarity that cut through the storm. "You lied to me so you could take her bedroom."

Victoria’s jaw trembled. For all her corporate ruthlessness and calculated schemes, the raw, unfiltered truth from a seven-year-old child stripped away every shred of her justification.

"Lily, darling... I did it for us," Victoria whispered weakly. "To give you a stable life without a mother who was always slipping away."

"She didn't slip away," Adam said, turning back toward the service dock. "You pushed her."

He walked back to the doorway and lifted Elena into his arms once more, carrying her out into the open air for the first time in over a thousand days. The cool rain fell softly against Elena's pale face, washing away the dust of her subterranean prison.

Lily ran toward them, her eyes widening in sheer, breathless wonder.

"Mommy..."

As Lily reached up and pressed the cold silver locket into Elena’s limp fingers, something miraculous happened. Elena’s hand slowly, instinctively closed around the metal pendant.

A long, trembling breath escaped Elena’s lips. Her eyes slowly parted, blinking through the darkness, until they found the small, crying face of her daughter.

"...Lily?" Elena whispered, the sound barely audible above the rain, but louder than thunder to the family she had returned to.
