Within a month, Elena’s rare respiratory condition entered remission under the care of top pulmonary specialists. Mateo had moved them to a safe, sunlit townhouse on the outer edge of the city’s historic district—far from the crime-infested slums, yet far enough from his own fortified estate to keep them out of his enemies' crosshairs.

Mateo visited them every Sunday afternoon without his usual armed entourage. To the public, he was an untouchable conglomerate CEO suspected of ruthless underworld dealings; to Aurelio, he was simply the tall man who brought chessboards and classical history books.

"A king who relies only on force loses the board before the tenth move," Mateo explained one afternoon, guiding Aurelio’s small hand across a marble chessboard. "Power isn't about how many people fear you, Aurelio. It’s about how many people you can protect when the storm hits."

Aurelio absorbed every word like a sponge. He had no father figure in his life, and Mateo filled that void with quiet discipline, teaching him resilience, mathematics, and dignity. For Mateo, those quiet Sundays were the only hours of the week he didn't feel the weight of his sins suffocating him.
