Chapter 2: A Ghost at the Door**

Forty-eight hours after the incident at the river, Aurelio’s mother, Elena, woke up to the sound of heavy engines idling in the dirt alley. She clutched a frayed blanket around her fragile shoulders, coughing violently as footsteps approached their warped wooden door.

When she opened it, two couriers in sharp dark suits bowed respectfully. Behind them stood an entire medical team with modern portable diagnostic equipment.

"Are you Elena Morales?" the lead courier asked gently. "Mr. Vance sends his regards. He has arranged for your immediate transfer to St. Jude’s Medical Pavilion."

Elena stared in pure disbelief. "I don’t have money. We don’t even have clean water."

"Everything has been paid in full," the man replied. "Your treatment, your mortgage, and the finest pediatric tutor for your son. Consider it an unconditional gift."

Aurelio peeked from behind his mother's skirt, holding the black and gold card he had hidden under his pillow. Outside, parked under the shade of an old oak tree, a black sedan sat with tinted windows rolled halfway down. Mateo watched through the glass, his eyes unreadable.
