Chapter 14: The Vance Foundation**
Five years later, the city had transformed. The corrupt industrial zones and toxic riverfronts were replaced by the Vance Public Justice Center—a nonprofit legal aid clinic and youth center funded by Mateo’s liquidated assets and directed by Aurelio Morales.
Aurelio had become one of the most respected young defense attorneys in the state, dedicating his life to keeping impoverished kids out of the foster system and off the streets. He walked the same riverbank every morning, watching children play safely in the newly built community parks.
Every month, Aurelio drove out to the correctional facility. They would sit across a simple metal table, playing chess on a small wooden board.
"You're defending the vulnerable, Aurelio," Mateo said during one visit, his hair now streaked with distinguished silver. "How does it feel?"
