The trials were swift. With Ramos’s cartel dismantled and the evidence meticulously cataloged by federal prosecutors, the regional underworld was permanently broken.

However, justice demanded absolute fairness. Mateo refused to use backroom deals or political loopholes. He stood before the federal judge, pleaded guilty to historical racketeering and financial charges from his early years, and accepted a full ten-year sentence in a minimum-security federal correctional facility.

As the judge slammed the gavel down, Mateo turned back to the gallery. Aurelio, dressed in his first tailored attorney’s suit, stood beside his mother. Elena had a tear running down her cheek, but Aurelio stood tall, placing his hand over his heart.
