Chapter 9: The Unraveling

Back in New York, the shockwaves from the Zurich leak hit the Vanguard boardroom like an earthquake. Stock prices dropped four percent in early trading, triggering automated sell-offs across institutional portfolios. Eleanor sat at the head of the mahogany table, her expression mask-like, though the white-gloved fingers resting on the blotter twitched ever so slightly.
"Get me the general counsel," Eleanor instructed without looking at her executive assistant. "And prepare a public statement distancing Vanguard from Julianna Vance's independent financial activities."
"It won't work this time, Ms. Vanguard," a voice said from the doorway.
Clara walked into the boardroom uninvited. She wasn't wearing her usual corporate attire; instead, she wore a simple dark blazer and carried a leather briefcase. Behind her stood Marcus and two federal agents wearing dark suits and carrying identification badges.
Eleanor slowly turned her head to look at the intruders, her eyes narrowing with calculated coldness. "You are trespassing, Clara. Security will escort you out immediately."
"Security isn't coming, Eleanor," one of the federal agents said, flashing a badge bearing the seal of the Department of Justice. "We have a federal warrant to seize all physical and digital records relating to the Cayman shell corporations tied to Vanguard’s asset transfers."
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. The remaining board members exchanged panicked glances, their self-assurance evaporating in the face of federal authority. Clara walked to the end of the table, setting her briefcase down right where Julianna used to sit. She popped the latches with a sharp click.
"You thought you could buy me off with tainted money and outmaneuver my foundation," Clara said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the room. "You thought that by exiling Julianna, you'd stem the bleeding. But you underestimated how interconnected your little empire really is. Every single offshore account Julianna managed was backed by Vanguard’s primary operating capital."
Eleanor rose slowly from her chair, her posture remaining upright and imposing despite her advanced age. She looked at Clara not with fear, but with a cold, analytical appraisal.

"You think a federal warrant will destroy us, Clara?" Eleanor asked, her voice carrying an eerie calmness. "The legal system moves slowly. By the time your investigators comb through our servers, our lawyers will have restructured every asset into new holding entities. You've merely inconvenienced us."
"Maybe," Clara replied, opening the briefcase to reveal a series of encrypted physical hard drives. "But this isn't just about money anymore. This is about the board members who signed off on the intimidation tactics. The federal investigators aren't just looking at tax evasion; they're looking at conspiracy, extortion, and assault."
