Chapter 6: The Independent Trust

Back in New York, the sun broke through the autumn haze, casting long golden shafts of light across the hardwood floors of Clara’s newly rented downtown office space. Orion Technologies was gone, absorbed into the sprawling leviathan of Vanguard, but Orion Labs—her new independent research foundation—was officially open. On the reception desk, the paperwork confirming the fifty-million-dollar endowment from Vanguard’s subsidiary accounts sat in a neat, leather-bound folder.

Clara stood by the window, watching her small team of engineers unload server racks and testing equipment from a delivery van down on the street. Her cheek had healed into a faint, yellowish discoloration, easily covered with a light touch of concealer. The physical pain had faded, but the psychological vigilance remained etched into her posture. She didn't trust the ease with which Eleanor had conceded to her demands. People like Eleanor didn't give away fifty million dollars out of respect; they did it because they were buying time.

Marcus, her lead hardware architect, walked into the office carrying a box of monitors. He set them down on a makeshift desk and wiped his forehead with the back of his hand.

"Funds cleared twenty minutes ago, Clara," Marcus said, a cautious smile breaking through his exhaustion. "Every cent. We've already secured the leasing rights for the cleanroom facility in Queens. We're back in business."

"Check the transfer metadata, Marcus," Clara said without turning around from the window. "I want a full cryptographic audit of the incoming wire. Trace every intermediary bank."

Marcus frowned, his smile fading. "You think there's a hook in the bait? The papers were signed under judicial supervision, and our legal team vetted every clause."

"Eleanor operates above ordinary judicial supervision," Clara said quietly. "If fifty million dollars appeared in our account that easily, it means it came from an account they didn't care about, or worse... an account they can legally repossess the moment we initiate our first major procurement cycle."

Marcus immediately walked over to his workstation, booted up a terminal, and began running a deep-packet trace on the financial routing numbers. The room fell silent save for the rapid clicking of keys. After ten minutes, Marcus let out a low whistle of disbelief.

"You're right," he muttered, his fingers flying across the board. "The wire originated from a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands that was flagged by European anti-money laundering authorities three days ago. If we touch a single dollar of this endowment to buy hardware, European regulators will freeze our assets under suspicion of receiving illicit funds."

Clara finally turned away from the window, her jaw set. Eleanor had laid a trap disguised as a concession.
