Chapter 4: The Boardroom Standoff

The silence in the boardroom grew heavy, broken only by the hum of the centralized ventilation system. Eleanor set her teacup down on its saucer with a faint, sharp clink. Her movements remained agonizingly slow and deliberate, belying the sharp intelligence behind her aging eyes. She looked at Julianna, whose chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked breaths, before turning her gaze entirely onto Clara.

"A dead-man's switch," Eleanor murmured, her voice carrying a chillingly calm cadence. "A classic maneuver from an era when engineers actually understood leverage. But Clara, my dear, you forget one fundamental truth about power: it doesn't reside in code or encrypted servers. Power resides in the people who control the enforcement of law."

"The documents are distributed globally, Eleanor," Clara replied, keeping her gaze locked on the older woman. "By the time your lawyers secure a court order in Zurich or Singapore, the press will already have the raw data. Vanguard’s stock will plummet before the opening bell on Wall Street."

Julianna recovered enough of her composure to sneer, though her hands trembled slightly beneath the table. "You think the press will publish documents provided by a disgruntled former CEO who just signed away her company? They'll call it a bitter retaliation. They'll ruin you."

"Let them try," Clara said. "I'd rather be ruined in the public square than live as a ghost in a corporation built on extortion and physical intimidation."

Eleanor raised a single gloved hand, cutting off Julianna’s impending retort. The matriarch leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, studying Clara as if she were a rare insect pinned to a board. There was a glimmer of genuine respect in Eleanor’s eyes, terrifying in its clinical detachment.

"You have more courage than I gave you credit for, Clara," Eleanor said softly. "The bruise on your cheek suits you less than this newfound spine. But stalemates are terribly inefficient. What is it that you actually want? You know we cannot simply return the company to you; the optics alone would destroy the board's confidence."

"I want my patents unencumbered," Clara said without hesitation. "I want my development team completely freed from Vanguard's oversight, with an independent endowment of fifty million dollars transferred to a trust of my choosing. And Julianna..." Clara paused, letting her eyes drift to the younger woman. "...Julianna leaves the building today. Permanently."

Julianna half-stood from her chair, her face contorted in rage. "You arrogant little—"

"Quiet, Julianna," Eleanor commanded without raising her voice. She maintained eye contact with Clara for several long seconds before nodding almost imperceptibly. "Done. Fifty million, the patents returned, and Julianna will be reassigned to our international holdings in Zurich, effective immediately. Do we have an accord?"
