Chapter 3: The Ghost in the System

The transfer was complete, but Clara hadn't slept a wink. At 6:00 AM, she sat at her desk, staring at the encrypted partition of her hard drive. Before handing over the master keys to Vanguard Holdings, she had executed a script she had written years ago during her paranoid cybersecurity days—a dead-man’s switch known internally as Project Lazarus. If her administrative credentials were ever revoked under duress, a compressed archive of every financial irregularity, shell company, and illicit transaction tied to Eleanor’s regime would automatically begin uploading to a decentralized server network distributed across three continents.

Her phone rang, shattering the morning quiet. It was Julianna.

"You're late, Clara," Julianna said, her tone dripping with false sweetness. "The board meeting at Orion—excuse me, Vanguard Tech—starts in twenty minutes. We expect you in the boardroom. Wear something high-collared. That bruise on your face is such an eyesore."

"I'll be there," Clara said flatly, hanging up without waiting for a reply.

When Clara walked into the thirty-second-floor boardroom of what used to be her own company, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive espresso and predatory triumph. Julianna sat at the head of the mahogany table, wearing an emerald-green silk blouse that contrasted sharply with the pink suit from yesterday, though her posture remained rigidly menacing. Eleanor sat to her right, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup, her white gloves resting neatly on the blotter.

"Sit down, Clara," Eleanor said without looking up. "We have much to discuss regarding the integration of your patents into our primary defense contracts."

"My patents are locked," Clara said, taking a seat directly across from them. Her voice was remarkably steady, surprising even herself. "The encryption keys are bound to my biometric signature. And as of midnight, the system recognizes my signature only when accompanied by a heartbeat that matches a live sensor currently locked in a safety deposit box at the Federal Reserve. If I stop breathing, the keys self-destruct, and the backup archives broadcast every single tax evasion document Vanguard has compiled since 2018."

Julianna’s face drained of color. She slammed her palm against the table. "You lying bitch! You don't have the authority—"

"I had it before you made me sign," Clara interrupted, leaning forward. "You thought you could beat me into submission with a baseball bat in a public lobby. You underestimated how much a person is willing to protect when they have nothing left to lose."
