Chapter 8: The Zurich Leak

The morning paper in Zurich didn't feature a massive headline, but the financial section carried a short, devastating report: Zurich Real Estate Holdings Tied to Offshore Money Laundering Investigation. Buried deep in the article was the name of the managing director who had overseen the asset transfers over the past three years—Julianna Vance.

Sitting in her high-rise apartment overlooking the foggy river, Julianna stared at the glowing screen of her tablet in utter disbelief. The Swiss federal police had already frozen her corporate accounts, and federal investigators were currently standing in the lobby of her office building with a search warrant. Eleanor had sacrificed her. The realization hit Julianna with the force of a physical blow. She had spent a decade breaking laws, ruining careers, and absorbing moral filth on behalf of Vanguard, and the moment a threat emerged, the matriarch cut her loose without a second thought.

Her phone rang, shattering the heavy silence of the apartment. It was a secure line from New York. Julianna answered it with a trembling hand.

"You saw the news, I assume," Eleanor’s voice came through the speaker, chillingly calm and devoid of any warmth.

"You set me up," Julianna hissed, her voice cracking with suppressed fury. "You used those accounts to launder the board’s contingency funds, and now you're pinning the entire operation on me while I'm stuck out here in exile."

"You made mistakes, Julianna," Eleanor replied evenly. "Your temper in Clara's lobby was the catalyst for this entire exposure. If you had maintained control, none of this would be happening. Vanguard must remain pure, and sometimes a diseased branch must be pruned to save the tree."

"I know where all the bodies are buried, Eleanor," Julianna threatened, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If I go down, I'm taking the board down with me. Every shell company, every bribe paid to federal regulators, every hostile takeover."

"Try it," Eleanor challenged softly. "You're sitting in a foreign jurisdiction with frozen assets, no legal representation, and a police force currently securing a search warrant for your hard drives. You have no leverage, Julianna. Accept your fate gracefully."

The line went dead. Julianna lowered the phone slowly, her gaze fixing on the reflection of her own face in the dark glass of the window. The fear she had once inflicted upon others now coiled tightly in her own stomach. She wasn't going to be a quiet scapegoat. If Eleanor wanted a war, Julianna would give her one that even Vanguard’s billions couldn't buy off.
