Chapter 9 - The Trap in the Server Room

The heavy steel door rattled violently as Marcus threw his entire weight against it, but the reinforced magnetic locks held fast. The server room was a tomb of high-end technology and humming machinery, the cool air conditioning blowing a chilling draft across the back of his neck.

On the diagnostic console, the laptop screen continued to broadcast the live feed of the conference room. Julianne’s face appeared in the frame, her eyes wide with unadulterated panic as she stared directly into the hidden camera lens.

"Marcus, can you hear me?" Julianne’s voice crackled through the laptop speaker, distorted slightly by the audio compression.

Marcus slammed his fist against the steel door one last time before turning around, walking slowly toward the console. He stared down at the glowing screen. "Julianne? Where are you? How are you broadcasting this?"

"I'm in the security dispatch office on the second floor," she whispered rapidly, her breath hitching as if she were trying to muffle her sound. "David didn't lock me in the penthouse. He brought me down here to monitor the feeds while he hunted you. But he made a mistake. He left his master administrative token plugged into the main switchboard."

Marcus leaned over the console, his eyes scanning the endless lines of scrolling code on the adjacent monitors. "Can you override the building lockdown from down there? Cali is bleeding out, Julianne. If we don't get emergency services up here within the hour, she's going to die."

"I'm trying, but the firewall is locking me out," Julianne replied, her voice breaking into a sob. "Every time I try to route an external signal, an automated script intercepts the ping and redirects it to an encrypted offshore server. Marcus... it's not just David. The entire board of directors signed off on this acquisition months ago. Cali discovered the paper trail last night. That's why they attacked her."

Marcus’s blood ran cold. The realization settled over him like a suffocating weight. It wasn't just a rogue partner gone mad with greed; it was an institutional conspiracy designed to erase anyone who stood in the way of a hostile corporate takeover worth billions.

"What about Detective Vance?" Marcus asked, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "He gave me the override card. He's on our side."

A heavy silence hung over the laptop speaker for several long seconds. When Julianne spoke again, her voice was barely a whisper.

"Marcus... Vance retired from the department three years ago. There is no active detective by that name on the city payroll."

Before Marcus could absorb the devastating implications of her words, the green status lights on every single server rack in the room simultaneously flickered from green to a harsh, glaring red.
