Chapter 5 - Darkness in the Penthouse

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows offered no relief, as thick, automated security shutters slammed down from the ceiling with a heavy, mechanical thud, sealing the penthouse off from the outside world.

Marcus froze, the green LED light of the emergency keycard casting an eerie, ghostly glow across his pale face. In the pitch black, the sounds of the room amplified tenfold: Cali’s ragged, rattling breaths from the floor, Julianne’s sharp, hyperventilating gasps near the wall, and the heavy, measured footsteps of someone moving slowly across the adjacent hallway.

"Stay down," Marcus whispered fiercely, his voice cutting through the heavy air.

He gripped the emergency keycard in one hand and the heavy brass paperweight in the other, sliding his back silently against the smooth wall as he crept toward the corridor archway. The footsteps stopped. A low, mocking chuckle echoed from the shadows near the private study.

"You always were too trusting, Marcus," David’s voice drifted through the dark, smooth and chillingly calm. "You built this entire security empire, yet you never once checked the master admin privileges on the backdoor protocols."

Marcus didn't reply. He focused entirely on the sound of the voice, calculating the distance. Ten feet. Eight feet.

Suddenly, a blinding beam of white light sliced through the darkness, pinning Marcus directly in its glare. The beam came from a tactical flashlight mounted on a suppressed firearm. The barrel was aimed straight at his chest.

Behind Marcus, a sharp gasp echoed as Cali suddenly went completely silent, her ragged breathing stopping mid-inhale. Julianne screamed out a warning, her voice shrill with terror.

"Drop the paperweight, Marcus," David commanded from behind the blinding light, his silhouette looming large in the narrow beam. "Or your wife takes her final breath right here on the marble."

Marcus’s fingers tightened around the heavy brass object. His knuckles turned white. He could feel the cold sweat rolling down his neck. He had a fraction of a second to make a choice that would seal all of their fates.

With a sudden, explosive roar, Marcus hurled the heavy brass paperweight straight into the center of the blinding flashlight beam, diving hard to the left as a deafening gunshot shattered the air.
