Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The heavy mahogany double doors echoed shut behind Marcus as he surged into the sun-drenched foyer of the penthouse. His dark jacket flared around his hips, the black shirt beneath damp with the sweat of a frantic sprint across the downtown plaza. His boots slapped hard against the pristine white marble floor. Ahead of him, Julianne stood frozen in her maroon cowl-neck midi dress, her red high heels catching the sharp morning light. Beneath her, sprawled across the cold stone, lay Cali. Her long dark hair fanned out like spilled ink, and her fingers clutched desperately at her abdomen where a dark stain bloomed across her white dress.
Marcus dropped to his knees, ignoring Julianne completely as he cupped Cali’s pale face in his palms. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps.
"Cali?" he choked out, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying vulnerability.
Cali's eyelids fluttered, her pupils dilated against the harsh glare of the floor-to-ceiling windows. She didn't answer right away, her chest heaving in shallow, painful motions.
Marcus leaned closer, his eyes burning with an intense, desperate fury as he searched her face.
"Don't lie to me," he whispered softly, the command thick with a suppressed agony that tore through the quiet room.
Julianne recoiled a half-step, her hands flying up defensively as her chest heaved beneath the rich fabric of her maroon dress. Her eyes darted wildly toward the windows, then down to Marcus’s rigid shoulders.
"Marcus, listen!" Julianne gasped, her voice trembling with a frantic, unhinged pitch. "You don't understand what just happened here! It wasn't me!"
Marcus didn't turn around. He kept his gaze locked on Cali's slipping consciousness. Above them, tucked discreetly into the ornate crown molding of the ceiling, a tiny black dome housing a security camera blinked once with a harsh, synthetic red light.
Julianne stared up at the blinking red lens, her mouth parting in sheer, unfiltered horror as the mechanical hum of the lens shifting position echoed in the tense space. "What are you looking at?" she whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified deadpan.

Before Marcus could answer, Cali’s hand shot out, her cold fingers gripping his wrist with unnatural strength as she whispered a name neither of them expected to hear.
