Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy brass handle rotated through a full ninety degrees with a sickeningly slow crawl. Marcus froze, his hand instinctively sliding toward the heavy brass paperweight resting on the nearby console table. Julianne let out a stifled sob, pressing her back flat against the glass wall as the double doors began to swing inward on well-oiled hinges.
The figure stepping through the threshold was not David. It was Detective Vance, his gray trench coat flapping slightly in the draft from the hallway, his badge glinting coldly beneath the recessed ceiling lights. His expression was completely unreadable, a mask of calculated professional detachment.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Vance," Vance said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that cut through the silence. "We received an anonymous distress call reporting a medical emergency and a possible altercation at this specific suite."
Marcus lowered the paperweight, his mind racing to calculate the timeline. The police had arrived suspiciously fast—faster than any ordinary emergency dispatch could manage. He shifted his stance to subtly block the detective’s line of sight to Cali, who was still gasping for air on the white marble floor.
"There's no emergency here, Detective," Marcus said, keeping his tone carefully leveled despite the adrenaline screaming in his veins. "Just a domestic accident. My wife slipped."
Vance didn't blink. He took two measured steps into the room, his eyes scanning every detail: the pool of darkening crimson pooling around Cali’s white dress, Julianne’s defensive posture and panicked breathing, and the distinct lack of any cleaning supplies or medical kits.
"An accident," Vance repeated skeptically, his gaze fixing on Julianne’s unblemished red high heels. Not a single drop of blood stained the leather, a statistical impossibility if she had truly been standing over the victim during the initial trauma. "And yet, Mrs. Vance is bleeding internally from what appears to be a blunt-force puncture wound."
Julianne gasped, covering her mouth with both hands as the realization of the detective’s observation hit her.
Vance stepped closer, pulling a small notebook from his pocket. "Furthermore, my precinct received a secure digital packet three minutes ago containing an unredacted audio file from the security system in this exact room. A file that records a very different conversation."

Vance pressed a button on his radio, and the tinny, crystal-clear sound of Marcus shouting at Julianne filled the quiet penthouse, followed by a shocking second voice that made Marcus's blood run cold.
