Chapter 13 - The Betrayal on the Heights

The gunshot echoed sharply against the cold concrete of the rooftop, swallowed almost instantly by the howling wind. David writhed on the gravel, his fingers clawing desperately at the sharp stones as blood seeped rapidly through the fingers of his ruined suit jacket.

The consultant stood over him, his face an emotionless mask as he slowly lowered the silenced pistol back into his shoulder holster. He didn't even glance down at the bleeding man. Instead, his cold, calculating eyes shifted back to Marcus.

"You always were the better strategist, Marcus," the consultant said, his voice entirely devoid of panic. "I miscalculated your willingness to gamble everything on a single, untraceable protocol."

Marcus didn't let down his guard. He kept his feet planted firmly on the gravel, his eyes locked on the consultant's right hand. "The game is over. The building is locked down, but the perimeter sensors tripped the moment you fired that shot. Federal agents are already on the ground floor."

A faint, ironic smile touched the corners of the consultant's mouth. "Perhaps. But a man in my position always has an extraction plan that doesn't rely on the front door."

The consultant reached inside his tailored suit jacket, his fingers moving with deliberate slowness toward his inner pocket. Marcus braced himself to charge, preparing to close the distance before the man could draw a weapon.

Before either of them could move, a sudden, bright beam of white light cut through the dark sky above them, accompanied by the heavy, thundering chop of helicopter rotor blades. A massive black tactical chopper dropped out of the low clouds, hovering directly over the center of the roof, its heavy searchlight blindingly pinning both men to the gravel.

A heavy carbon-fiber rope dropped rapidly from the open side door of the aircraft, swinging wildly in the rotor wash. Two heavily armed federal agents in matte-black tactical gear slid down the rope with practiced precision, their assault rifles raised and locked.

"Federal Law Enforcement! Nobody move!" the lead agent roared over the deafening roar of the engine.

The consultant slowly raised his hands into the air, his expression remaining completely impassive as the agents rushed forward, slamming him face-first onto the gravel and securing heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline finally beginning to drain from his veins and leaving a profound, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake. He turned away from the unfolding arrest, looking toward the access stairwell.

"Cali," he whispered aloud, the memory of her bleeding on the white marble floor rushing back with terrifying clarity.

He didn't wait for the agents to clear him; he broke into a dead sprint toward the open stairwell door, leaping down the concrete steps two at a time as he raced back down to the penthouse.
