Chapter 8

The metal door swung open silently, revealing the narrow exterior catwalk bathed in the harsh, silver glow of the city at dusk. The wind hit them instantly, howling around the corners of the glass-and-steel skyscraper twenty stories above the glittering avenues of downtown. Elena gasped, pulling her velvet dress tightly around her legs as she stepped out into the open air, the vertigo hitting her like a physical wave. Below them, traffic crawled like glowing ants along the concrete canyons of the metropolis.

"Don't look down," Lorenzo instructed, his voice steady and calm, designed to anchor her racing mind. "Keep your eyes on my shoulder. Step where I step."

He moved out onto the metal grating, his leather shoes gripping the perforated surface despite the slick moisture of the evening fog. The grey suit jacket snapped violently in the wind, but Lorenzo didn't break his rhythm. He moved with the practiced balance of a man who had survived a life of calculated risks, keeping one hand extended behind him to guide Elena. She followed closely, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her knuckles turning white as she clung to the cold steel railing that ran along the edge of the building.

The catwalk stretched for thirty feet before reaching the louvered access panel of the penthouse's master HVAC system. Every step felt exposed, a clear target for anyone looking up from the streets or peering out from neighboring high-rises. But the elements worked to their advantage; the swirling fog and gathering dusk provided a layer of natural camouflage against the glittering backdrop of the city skyline.

Lorenzo reached the heavy metal access panel, grabbing the rusted handle and throwing his weight against it. The rusted hinges groaned in protest before giving way with a loud clatter that echoed dangerously over the wind. Without hesitation, he slipped inside the dark, dusty duct, turning around immediately to pull Elena in after him.

They tumbled into the narrow metal tube, coughing as the scent of dust and old filters filled their lungs. Lorenzo quickly pulled the access panel shut, latching it from the inside just as a sudden flash of light cut across the exterior glass outside. A security drone, equipped with a high-intensity thermal camera, hummed past the window they had just vacated, casting a sweeping red glow against the metal walls of the duct.

Elena pressed her back against the curved interior of the ventilation shaft, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. "They're searching the exterior."

"They know we're still in the building," Lorenzo replied quietly, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his pocket and clicking it on. The beam cut through the swirling dust motes, illuminating the cramped path that led directly toward the heart of the penthouse. "Which means Victor is thorough. We have to move fast before he realizes we bypassed his ground-floor trap."
