Chapter 13

The wind screamed across the rooftop helipad, turning every movement into a battle against the elements. Victor stood ten paces away, the muzzle of his pistol still pressed against little Mia's head. The toddler let out a soft cry, frightened by the deafening noise of the chopper and the harsh searchlights blinding her eyes.

"Back off, Lorenzo!" Victor screamed over the roar of the rotors, his face twisted in a mask of desperate fury. "Order your federal friends to stand down, or the girl takes the first bullet!"

Lorenzo took another slow, deliberate step forward. His dark eyes locked onto Victor’s, communicating an absolute, terrifying calm that unsettled even the hardened security chief.

"You think killing a child saves you, Victor?" Lorenzo’s voice, amplified by a small tactical mic clipped to his lapel, cut through the noise of the engine. "The moment you pull that trigger, these federal snipers will turn you into mist. There is no escape off this roof. You are already dead."

Victor hesitated, his eyes darting briefly toward the sniper positioned on the skids of the hovering helicopter. It was the micro-second of distraction Lorenzo had been waiting for.

With blinding speed, Lorenzo dropped to one knee, sweeping his leg out in a low, vicious arc that caught Victor completely off guard. The security chief's legs swept out from under him, sending him crashing hard onto the concrete pad. The pistol flew from his grip, sliding across the wet surface toward the edge of the roof.

Simultaneously, little Mia tumbled free of Victor’s grasp. Lorenzo lunged forward, scooping the toddler into his arms and rolling away just as Victor scrambled to recover.

"Take the shot!" Lorenzo roared as he shielded Mia against his chest, diving toward the open cabin of the helicopter.

A sharp crack echoed over the engine noise. Victor slumped forward onto the concrete, his movements stopping instantly as the tactical agents secured the perimeter.

Lorenzo scrambled into the cabin, collapsing onto the bench seat beside Elena. He pulled little Mia tightly against his chest, his hands trembling as he stroked her dark hair. Elena threw her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably as the tension of the long, horrifying night finally broke.

"She's okay," Lorenzo whispered into his wife's ear, his own voice cracking with emotion he had suppressed for years. "She's safe."

The helicopter lifted off smoothly from the rooftop pad, rising rapidly into the clear night sky above the glittering expanse of the city. Below them, the penthouse lights grew smaller, fading into the glittering tapestry of downtown. The old empire was gone, dismantled in a single night of fire and betrayal, but something far more valuable had survived the wreckage.
