Chapter 4

Lorenzo picked up the leather-bound ledger, his thumb tracing the embossed gold lettering on the cover. Every page represented a calculated risk, a transaction that could either secure his family's future or land him in a maximum-security prison for the rest of his natural life. He flipped through the crisp pages until he reached the final entries—the ones detailing the massive shipment arriving at the south-side docks tonight. The handwriting was his own, but the annotations in the margin were written in a strange, unfamiliar blue ink.
"This isn't Marcus's writing," Lorenzo murmured, bringing the page closer to the lamp.
Elena leaned in, her dark hair brushing against his shoulder. "No, it's not. Look at the date on the bottom of the page. It's from yesterday afternoon. Someone was in your safe while you were at the country club, Lorenzo. Someone who had the combination."
The realization hit him with staggering clarity. The breach wasn't just external; it was happening right under his own roof. Only two people besides him knew the numerical combination to the wall safe behind the bookshelf: Marcus, and his head of security, Victor. The weight of betrayal shifted, multiplying in intensity. Victor was a man Lorenzo had personally pulled out of a burning car a decade ago, a man who owed him a life debt. If Victor had turned, then every guard, every camera, and every exit in this penthouse could no longer be trusted.
"Victor," Lorenzo whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.
"He took a call in the hallway yesterday afternoon while you were out," Elena added, her voice dropping to a cautious murmur. "I didn't hear much, but I heard him mention a payout and a midnight transfer. I didn't want to alarm you until I was certain, but when Mia wandered into the living room today and saw me put the sedative in your drink to stop you from leaving... she understood more than I realized."

Lorenzo closed the ledger with a heavy thud that echoed in the quiet study. He looked at his wife, seeing past the elegant velvet dress and the composed exterior to the fierce protector hiding underneath. For years, he had believed that power meant standing alone at the top, immune to the weaknesses of emotional attachment. Now, standing in the shadows of his own office, he realized that his family was the only true anchor he had left in a world full of sharks.
"We need to leave," Lorenzo said, reaching for his keys. "Now."
