Chapter 7

The realization hit Lorenzo like a physical blow. Leaving Mia behind was a tactical failure of the worst magnitude, one that threatened to unravel his cold composure entirely. He had trained himself to view emotions as liabilities, yet the thought of his little girl in the hands of a traitor like Victor made his stomach churn with nausea. Elena clutched his arm, her fingernails digging through the wool of his suit jacket with desperate force.

"We have to go back," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with maternal anguish. "We cannot leave her there, Lorenzo. They will use her against us."

"If we go back through that door now, we walk straight into a firing squad," Lorenzo said, his voice hard, though his eyes betrayed the internal torment he was fighting to control. "Victor knows we used the emergency chute. He’ll have men waiting at the bottom of these stairs in the garage. Going back up is suicide."

"Then find another way!" Elena urged, her tears finally spilling over. "You know every inch of this building. There has to be a service lift, a vent, anything!"

Lorenzo closed his eyes for a single second, forcing his racing thoughts to organize into a tactical plan. The penthouse spanned the entire top floor of the high-rise, a sprawling fortress of wealth. Aside from the main elevators and the utility stairwell, the building’s old architectural plans included a maintenance catwalk that ran along the exterior facade, used window-washers and HVAC technicians. It was narrow, exposed to the howling wind twenty stories above the street, and entirely unshielded.

"The HVAC access panel," Lorenzo said suddenly, opening his eyes. "End of the hall. It leads to the ventilation shaft above the master suite. From there, we can drop down into the gallery."

"It's twenty stories up," Elena whispered, staring into the impenetrable darkness of the stairwell.

"Do you want to see our daughter again or not?" Lorenzo challenged quietly, gripping her chin and forcing her to look at him.

Elena swallowed hard, her hesitation vanishing replaced by a fierce, desperate resolve. "Lead the way."

They moved down the concrete steps in total darkness, relying on memory and touch to guide their feet. Every second that ticked by felt like an eternity, knowing that Mia was alone in the hands of men who valued human life only as currency. Lorenzo’s mind raced through the layout of the penthouse. Victor would secure the perimeter first, then sweep the rooms. Mia was too young to understand the danger, which might actually work to her advantage; children often blended into the background when adults were focused on high-stakes power struggles.

They reached the heavy metal door at the end of the utility corridor. Lorenzo pressed his ear against the cold steel, listening intently. Silence. No heavy boots, no raised voices—just the distant hum of the building's massive climate control units echoing through the metal ductwork. He pulled a small lockpick set from the lining of his belt, his fingers working with practiced, mechanical precision. With a soft click, the latch gave way.
