BLOOD ON MARBLE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15

Six months later, the penthouse had been completely restored, though its interior no longer resembled a cold, heavily guarded fortress. The harsh marble floors were now softened by warm wool rugs, and the crystal chandelier cast a gentle, welcoming light over a home filled with genuine laughter and peace.

Lorenzo sat at the round marble table in the center of the spacious living room, wearing a simple black shirt without the heavy grey suit jacket. The neck tattoo was still visible, a permanent reminder of the man he used to be, but the fierce, paranoid edge in his dark eyes had been replaced by a deep, grounded tranquility. In his hand, he held a simple glass of dark red cranberry juice—completely safe, completely ordinary.

Across the room, Elena stood near the mahogany doorway, wearing a soft cream-colored dress that caught the morning sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Her hair was worn loose, falling naturally over her shoulders as she watched little Mia chase a bright yellow ribbon across the polished floor. The toddler laughed gleefully, her small canvas shoes tapping rhythmically against the stone.

Elena caught Lorenzo’s eye across the room. She smiled, a warm, unreserved expression that crinkled the corners of her eyes and erased every trace of the fear and suspicion that had once defined their existence. Lorenzo smiled back, raising his glass slightly in a silent toast to the life they had fought so desperately to protect.

The heavy front door chimed softly as the morning courier dropped off a package, but neither of them flinched. The threats of the syndicate were a distant memory, locked away in federal archives and court transcripts. Marcus was serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary, and Victor’s name was spoken only in past tense by those who remembered the old days of the underworld.

Mia scampered over to the marble table, stopping right where she had stood months ago on that fateful evening. She reached up, placing her small hands on the cool edge of the stone, looking up at her father with innocent curiosity.

Lorenzo set his glass down carefully, crouching to eye level with his daughter. He picked up the yellow ribbon she had dropped, tying it gently back into her hair with steady, practiced fingers.

"What is it, little one?" Lorenzo asked softly, his voice full of warmth and absolute paternal devotion.

May you like

Mia giggled, shaking her head and running back toward her mother.

Lorenzo stood up, walking over to join his family by the sunlit window. Elena wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest as they watched the city wake up far below. The past was buried, the secrets were gone, and the circle was finally, perfectly whole.
