Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Hedge

The crisp night air suddenly felt freezing, chilling me to the bone despite the sharp black tuxedo I wore. I stared at Marcus Vance, trying to weigh his words against the terrifying scene unfolding just a few feet away inside my home. Was he telling the truth, or was this just another layer of an elaborate, sadistic psychological game designed to manipulate my next move?
“If Julian is faking it, why go to such extreme lengths?” I asked, keeping my voice low so it wouldn't carry through the glass doors. “Why use my own labs? Why involve Clara?”
Marcus sneered, his dark eyes glinting maliciously in the porch light.
“Clara has always been drowning in gambling debts, Arthur. Did you really think she retired comfortably in Florida? Vanguard bought her out six months ago. She let them into your house, and Julian willingly played the martyr because they promised him a seat on the new board once you were out of the picture,” Marcus explained, his tone laced with a sickening satisfaction. “They don't just want your company, Arthur. They want you destroyed completely—professionally, personally, and publicly.”
I glanced back at the digital terminal on the wall. The timer had dropped to 03:38:15. Inside the living room, Julian slowly stopped his fake writhing. He pushed himself up from the floor, wiping a fake sheen of sweat from his forehead, and looked directly out the window at me with a cold, triumphant grin. Clara stood up beside him, refusing to meet my eyes, her head bowed in deep shame. Sophia, realizing the performance was over, stopped crying and simply stared at her cousin with a look of profound, chilling confusion.
The betrayal cut deeper than any knife. My own family had conspired with my worst corporate enemies to strip me of everything I had built.
“What do you want, Marcus?” I asked, turning my full attention back to my former security chief. “You didn't crawl out of the woodwork tonight just to give me a history lesson.”
Marcus smiled, a slow, predatory expression that didn't reach his eyes. He reached into his trench coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, matte-black USB drive, holding it up between his fingers so the porch light caught the metallic casing.
“This drive contains the complete, unedited communication logs between Vanguard Industries, Clara, and Julian over the past eight months,” Marcus said softly. “It proves every single allegation against them, and it exposes the real conspirators hiding on your board of directors. With this, you don't just save your company—you obliterate them.”
“And what’s your price?” I asked immediately. Experience had taught me that nothing in this world was ever free, especially vengeance.
Marcus stepped closer, the white picket fence the only barrier between us.
“Full reinstatement as CEO, complete restoration of my pension, and public exoneration with a formal apology published on the front page of every major financial daily,” Marcus whispered.

Before I could answer, the front door of the house suddenly swung wide open, and the masked figure stepped out onto the porch, holding a second black leather ledger.
