Chapter 5 - A Legacy of Betrayal

The bold black letters pressed against the glass read: ASSET TRANSFER AND CONFESSION OF LIABILITY. My eyes scanned down the page, catching paragraphs detailing the illegal acquisition of bio-synthetic patents, unauthorized human trials, and a full corporate confession that would instantly strip me of my wealth, my reputation, and my freedom. If I signed it, I would walk straight into a federal prison cell before sunrise. If I refused, Julian would suffer the agonizing effects of the experimental pathogen currently coursing through his veins, and Sophia… God only knew what they had planned for my little girl.
“You want me to sign away my company and take the fall for a crime I didn’t even commit?” I shouted, the veins in my neck bulging with uncontainable fury. “Is this a corporate takeover orchestrated by the board? Did Vanguard Industries put you up to this?”
The masked figure remained entirely silent, the painted porcelain smile glowing under the recessed ceiling lights. The mechanical voice on the collar did not answer my question. Instead, the figure slowly turned the ledger around, revealing a digital countdown timer glowing in red LED numbers embedded in the back cover of the book.
03:45:12.
Three hours and forty-five minutes until the compound in Julian’s arm reached his heart. Three hours and forty-five minutes until my entire life was completely dismantled.
“The clock is ticking, Arthur,” the flat, mechanical voice echoed through the patio speakers. “You have two choices. You can sign the confession via the digital terminal wired to the exterior smart-lock on your left, or you can watch your nephew convulse right here on this floor while your daughter watches.”
I spun around, my eyes frantically searching the exterior wall beside the sliding glass doors. Sure enough, tucked discreetly behind a decorative ivy planter, a sleek black digital terminal was glowing with a blinking green input light. A biometric fingerprint scanner and a stylus pad sat ready for immediate use. They had planned every single detail down to the square inch. They knew I would check the perimeter first. They knew I would try to break the glass. They had engineered this entire trap to break my spirit before I even touched the keyboard.
Inside the house, Julian suddenly gasped, his knees buckling under him. He dropped to the floor, dragging Sophia down with him. The little girl let out a piercing scream, kicking her legs furiously as Clara scrambled forward, trying to pull Julian away from her.
“Help him! Oh God, it’s working too fast!” Clara shrieked, looking through the glass directly at me with eyes wide with pure, unfiltered terror.
Julian clutched his bandaged arm, his face turning an alarming shade of pale grey as a violent tremor wracked his entire body.
“Uncle… do it…” Julian choked out, his voice straining against the pain. “Sign the damn papers… save Sophia…”

My hand hovered over the biometric scanner on the exterior wall, my finger trembling violently as the red digital timer blinked relentlessly in the background.
