Chapter 11 - Sirens in the Distance

The wailing of police sirens echoed sharply through the quiet suburban neighborhood, cutting through the tense night air. The red and blue flashing lights began to paint erratic streaks across the white picket fence and the front of the house. Sarah froze, her calculated composure slipping for a fraction of a second as she whipped her head around toward the street.

“Who called the authorities?” Sarah demanded, glaring furiously at Julian, who stood in the doorway with Sophia securely held against his side.

“It wasn't us!” Julian shouted back over the rising wail of the approaching patrol cars, looking genuinely panicked for the first time all evening. “We followed the protocol to the letter!”

I didn't waste a second. While Sarah was momentarily distracted by the flashing lights, I lunged toward the digital terminal on the wall, slammed my thumb down onto the biometric scanner, and tapped a rapid sequence into the keypad. The terminal screen flashed green, emitting a sharp, triumphant chime.

TRANSFER INITIATED: SECURE BACKUP ROUTED TO FEDERAL SERVERS.

Sarah spun back toward me with a snarl, her professional facade completely shattering.

“What did you just do, Arthur?!” she screamed, lunging across the fence, her fingernails catching the sleeve of my tuxedo jacket and tearing the crisp fabric as I pulled away just in time.

“I just uploaded Sarah Vance’s original patent registry and the complete conspiracy logs directly to the Department of Justice,” I panted, backing away down the sidewalk toward the approaching police cruiser lights as they turned down our street. “Your little game is over, Sarah. The federal servers have everything.”

Sarah’s face drained of all color. She turned frantically toward Julian.

“Get the girl! We need leverage, now!” she ordered, pointing a trembling finger at Sophia.

Julian reacted instantly, hoisting Sophia up into his arms and bolting toward the back exit of the house, dragging a weeping Clara along behind them.

“Stop right there! Federal agents!” a booming voice echoed from the end of the driveway as two armed officers in tactical gear sprinted onto the lawn, their flashlights blindingly bright in the darkness.

Sarah stood frozen on the porch, her hands trembling as she looked at the approaching officers, then back at me. She slowly lowered her head, realizing the trap had finally snapped shut on her instead of me.

“You think you won, Arthur?” Sarah hissed softly as the tactical officers tackled her to the ground, pinning her face-first against the wooden porch. “Check your daughter's room upstairs before you celebrate.”

My blood ran instantly cold. I spun around and bolted toward the open front door, leaving the officers securing Sarah behind me.
