Chapter 2 - Locked Out of Truth

The heavy glass door refused to budge under my frantic weight. I threw my shoulder against it, but the reinforced frame held firm, mocking my desperation. Inside the brightly lit living room, Clara’s face twisted into an expression of desperate warning, while Julian maintained his chilling, motionless composure. He kept his large hand pressed firmly across Sophia’s mouth, cutting off her panicked breathing. My little girl’s wide, tear-filled eyes locked onto mine through the double-paned glass, pleading for a rescue I couldn't immediately deliver.

“Open this door, Julian, or I swear I will shatter every window in this damn house!” I yelled, my voice cracking with adrenaline and rage.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at me, a cold, humorless smirk touching the corners of his mouth. He didn't look like the troubled nephew I had bailed out of financial ruin three months ago. He looked like a cold-blooded stranger who had mapped out every second of this horrifying scenario. With his bandaged arm, he maintained a secure, painful grip on Sophia, dragging her a few feet further away from the patio entrance and deeper into the shadow of the staircase. Clara lunged after them, grabbing Julian’s sleeve, her lips moving rapidly in what looked like an urgent, desperate plea for him to stop.

“You’re ruining everything, Julian! He’s not supposed to be back for another two hours!” Clara yelled, her muffled voice bleeding through the glass.

Julian snapped something back at her, his dark eyes flashing with dangerous authority. He was calling the shots now, not Clara. I scanned the patio frantically for something heavy—a planter, a stone, anything to break the glass. My fingers grazed the edge of a heavy cast-iron birdbath resting near the porch column. With a grunt of effort, I hoisted it off its base and spun around, lifting it high above my head, ready to hurl it directly through the sliding door.

“Arthur, stop!” Clara screamed, finally abandoning Julian to press both of her palms flat against the glass on her side. “If you break that glass, you sign her death warrant! We aren’t the ones holding the real knife!”

I froze, the heavy iron birdbath trembling in my grip. My breath hitched in my throat.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded, lowering the heavy metal slightly but keeping my muscles coiled to strike. “Explain yourself right now, Clara, or I swear to God I’m coming through!”

Clara swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over her coiffed blonde hair, and pointed a trembling finger not at Julian, but directly down toward the basement stairs behind him.

“It’s not us you need to worry about,” she whispered, her lips forming the words just as the basement door slowly creaked open from the inside.
