Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy oak front door swung shut behind us with a dull, echoing thud that made little Lily flinch against my shoulder. The vibrant pink and white party balloons bobbed outside the living room windows, mocking the suffocating silence that had suddenly taken over our home. I carried Lily down the carpeted hallway, her small breathing hitching every few seconds as the remnants of her heavy sobbing subsided into quiet, exhausted sniffles. I sat down with her on the edge of the guest room bed, gently brushing the blonde curls away from her damp forehead. She looked up at me with wide, terrified blue eyes that held a maturity no four-year-old should ever possess.

"Daddy, is Mommy still mad at me?" she whispered, her voice so fragile it felt like it might shatter in the quiet room.

"No, sweetheart. Mommy is just having a really hard day, but you are safe with me," I murmured, kissing the top of her head while my mind raced through the wreckage of our marriage.

This wasn't just about a ruined birthday party for Chloe, our oldest daughter who was currently still out in the yard playing with our neighbors. This was about a growing, festering darkness in Clara that I had willfully ignored for months. Every minor mistake Lily made was met with disproportionate fury, cold isolation, and verbal venom that frightened me to my core. I stood up and walked to the hallway, glancing back toward the white bathroom door where Clara had locked her away just moments before. The memory of finding Lily huddled in that dark, narrow space made my stomach churn with a sickening blend of guilt and anger. I needed answers, and I needed them tonight after the guests finally left our suburban paradise.

I pushed the guest room door open a fraction of an inch to check the hallway, making sure Clara hadn't followed us inside yet. The hallway was completely empty, illuminated only by the fading afternoon light spilling through the tall stained-glass window near the stairs. But as I stared at the polished hardwood floor, I noticed something small and metallic glinting near the baseboard by the linen closet. I stepped out quietly, crouched down, and picked it up with a furrowed brow. It was a small brass key, old and heavy, shaped unlike any modern lock in our entire newly renovated house.
