Chapter 14 - Sirens in the Night

The gunshot rang out into the quiet suburban night, deafening and sharp, shattering the rear window of the SUV in a shower of glass. I slammed into Clara, driving her hard against the side of the car door and wrestling the heavy firearm out of her grasp. She fought back with unnatural strength, scratching and biting like a trapped animal, but I pinned her arms against the gravel with all my weight.
"Get off me! Let me go!" Clara screamed, thrashing violently beneath me as the reality of her defeat finally began to set in.
Arthur rushed past us, throwing open the back door of the SUV and unbuckling both Chloe and Lily from their car seats with trembling hands.
"Daddy! Mommy was hurting us!" four-year-old Lily sobbed, throwing her small arms around Arthur's neck as he pulled her safely out of the vehicle.
"I know, baby. Daddy’s got you. You're safe now," Arthur murmured, carrying both girls away from the car and toward the safety of the front porch.
Suddenly, the wail of approaching police sirens cut through the night air, red and blue emergency lights flashing against the surrounding houses as multiple cruisers turned the corner. Marcus's unmarked police vehicle led the pack, screeching to a halt right across our driveway and blocking the exit completely. Officers poured out of the cruisers with their service weapons drawn, rushing toward the driveway where I was still holding Clara down.
"Freeze! Police! Drop whatever is in your hands!" an officer shouted, closing in fast with his flashlight blindingly bright in my eyes.
"I'm unarmed! She has the weapon on the ground beside her!" I yelled, slowly lifting my hands away from Clara and backing up onto the gravel.
Two officers immediately moved in, placing handcuffs on Clara as she continued to scream obscenities and thrash against the pavement until they hoisted her up. Marcus walked over to me, his expression a mix of relief and grim professional satisfaction as he looked at the shattered SUV window.
"You okay, Ethan?" Marcus asked, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder as the paramedics rushed toward the house to check on the girls.

"I'm okay, Marcus. But you need to send a rescue team down into our root cellar right now," I said, breathing heavily as I looked toward the dark open basement door. "Sarah Miller is still alive down there."
