Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

I burst through the front door and stepped out onto the porch, the cool night air hitting my face as I scanned the driveway. Clara’s silver SUV was parked right beside the lawn, its engine running with the headlights cutting through the darkness of the suburban street. Chloe was already strapped into the back seat, crying quietly, while Clara was frantically trying to buckle a terrified Lily into her booster seat.

"Clara! Stop right there!" I yelled, sprinting down the porch steps and racing across the gravel driveway toward the vehicle.

Clara whipped around, her eyes wide and wild with a dangerous, cornered desperation as she pulled the heavy firearm out of her floral dress pocket.

"Stay back, Ethan! Don't you dare come another step closer!" Clara shrieked, pointing the weapon directly at my chest with a trembling hand.

"Put the gun down, Clara! Marcus knows everything! The police are already on their way here!" I lied, slowing my pace to a walk as I held my hands up to show I was unarmed.

"You're lying! Nobody knows anything! This is our family, and nobody is going to take my girls away from me!" she screamed, tears of pure rage streaming down her face.

From the porch behind me, Arthur stepped out into the night air, walking slowly down the steps with his hands raised in surrender.

"Put it down, Clara. It's over. Sarah is alive. The truth is out," Arthur said, his voice steady and calm as he approached the vehicle.

Clara swung the barrel of the gun toward Arthur, her face contorting with a terrifying mix of betrayal and absolute madness. "You betrayed me, Dad! You let them down there!"

"I never should have helped you hide the truth, Clara. Let the girls go," Arthur pleaded, taking another slow step forward to shield me from her line of fire.

"Never!" Clara shrieked, her finger tightening on the trigger just as I launched myself forward across the hood of the car to tackle her to the ground.
