Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

"She ruined Chloe's birthday party!" Clara shouted, her voice cutting through the humid afternoon air like shattered glass as she pointed a trembling, manicured finger at the small, trembling child in my arms.

"She’s four years old, Clara! It was just a spilled pitcher of punch, not a federal disaster!" I yelled back, my chest heaving beneath my beige button-down shirt as I instinctively tightened my grip on Lily.

"She did it on purpose, Ethan! She always ruins everything that isn't about her!" Clara fired off instantly, stepping closer with her eyes narrowed and her brown hair coming loose from its tight bun.

"You're talking about a toddler! Listen to yourself right now!" I snapped, my voice rising in raw disbelief as I stared at my wife’s cold expression.

"Enough, both of you," Arthur’s deep, gravelly voice rumbled from the edge of the patio, though he didn't step forward to intervene.

"Stay out of this, Dad! You raised her to be this cold!" I shot toward my father, my frustration boiling over every boundary we had built over the years.

"Don't you dare talk to your father that way over a brat who won't even learn her lesson!" Clara hissed, her face contorting with a bitter rage I had never seen before.

"She is my daughter, and I will not let you lock her in a dark room ever again!" I roared, turning my back on Clara to carry Lily toward the safety of the house.

"If you walk away with her right now, Ethan, don't ever bother coming back through that front door," Clara whispered with a chilling finality that stopped me dead in my tracks.
