Chapter 11 - The Living Corpse

"Ethan..." a dry, raspy voice whispered from the darkness of the cage, sounding less like a human and more like a dying wind.

I stumbled backward, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I stared at the figure slowly pulling herself out from beneath the tarp. It wasn't a corpse; it was an emaciated, elderly woman with hollow cheeks, matted gray hair, and wild, desperate eyes. It was Sarah Miller, somehow clinging to life in this subterranean nightmare after all these years of unimaginable isolation and torment.

"Sarah? My God... you're alive," I breathed out, rushing over to the rusted wire mesh and grabbing her frail, trembling hand through the gaps.

"She... she lied to you," Sarah gasped, coughing violently before gripping my fingers with surprising strength. "Clara isn't my stepdaughter... she's my younger sister. Arthur adopted her after our parents died, but the madness... it consumed her early."

My mind spun as the entire foundation of the lies I had been fed for years crumbled into dust. "Clara is your sister? But Arthur always told everyone she was his daughter from a second marriage!"

"It was all a cover to protect the family name and keep people from looking into the psychiatric facility where she spent her teenage years," Sarah whispered, her eyes wide with lingering trauma. "When I tried to commit her legally to protect the neighborhood children, she locked me down here... and Arthur helped her cover it up out of sheer terror."

"Arthur helped?" I asked, my voice dropping to a horrified whisper as I remembered my father upstairs. "Arthur is upstairs right now, pretending to be a helpless old grandfather while his own daughter runs this house like a prison."

"Arthur is just as trapped as you are, Ethan. He didn't lock you down here—Clara did because she's planning to take the girls and leave tonight," Sarah warned, pulling me closer to the mesh. "You have to get out of here before she packs up Chloe and Lily and disappears forever."

"I have the flat-head screwdriver on the table. I'm going to pry this lock open right now and get you out of here, Sarah," I said with sudden, fierce determination.

I turned around and ran back toward the work table, grabbing the tool and rushing back to the rusted padlock securing the cage door. I jammed the flat-head screwdriver into the shackle mechanism, using all my body weight to force the rusted pins apart with a loud screech.

"Hurry, Ethan!" Sarah cried out from the dark cage. "I hear footsteps coming back down the cellar stairs!"
