Chapter 9 - Inside the Package

Sarah stood frozen in the center of the living room, clutching the heavy cardboard box against her beige cardigan as if it were a physical lifeline. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps, and the confident, manipulative woman who had gaslit Chloe for months was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered fugitive facing inevitable capture.
"You don't want to open this, David," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed panic. "Some things are better left buried. If you open this box, nothing in our lives will ever go back to normal. You'll destroy whatever is left of our family."
"Our family was destroyed the moment you started stealing from my safe and torturing my daughter," David replied coldly, taking a slow step toward her. His hand still gripped the heavy brass bookend from the side table, his knuckles white with strain. "Put the box on the coffee table and step away from it. Now."
Sarah hesitated, her blue eyes darting toward the front window as if weighing her chances of running out the front door. But Chloe was already standing near the entryway, blocking the path with a determined, unyielding expression. Trapped on all sides, Sarah slowly exhaled a defeated breath, walked over to the wooden coffee table, and lowered the package onto the surface with a heavy, dull thud.
David approached the table cautiously. He kept one eye on his wife while using his free hand to slice through the thick brown packing tape with a utility knife he kept in his shirt pocket. The tape parted with a sharp, tearing sound that echoed loudly in the tense silence of the room.
With a deep breath, David folded back the thick cardboard flaps.
Inside the box lay a collection of old, faded photo albums, a stack of legal documents tied together with red ribbon, and a sleek, modern digital hard drive. Resting on top of the pile was a single, heavy gold pocket watch attached to a tarnished silver chain—the exact vintage timepiece belonging to David’s late father that had supposedly vanished from the locked wall safe weeks ago.
David reached down, his fingers gently brushing the cold metal of the pocket watch. He picked it up, feeling the familiar weight of it in his palm. His throat tightened as memories of his father flooded his mind, colliding violently with the bitter reality of his wife's betrayal.
"My father's watch," David whispered, his voice dangerously thick with emotion. He lifted his gaze to Sarah, his eyes burning with restrained fury. "How did this get into a courier drop if it was locked in a biometric safe inside my house?"
"Because I had a duplicate key made three years ago," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a hollow, defeated whisper as she stared at the floor. "Before we even got married. I knew how to access everything from the very beginning."
Chloe stepped forward, peering down into the open box. Her eyes caught the red-ribboned legal documents resting beneath the photo albums. She reached out and pulled the top folder free, opening the heavy cardstock cover to read the bold header printed at the top of the page.

"Dad," Chloe said, her voice trembling as her eyes scanned the printed text. "You need to read this right now. This isn't just about stolen money or family heirlooms. Look at what Sarah's real name is on these court papers."
