Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

The living room grew intensely quiet, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the steady, rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the hallway. David stared at the folder labeled Guest Room Safe. He had installed the biometric security system himself two years ago, believing it was the safest place to store birth certificates, passport documents, and a small emergency fund of cash for household repairs. Only he and Sarah possessed the master PIN codes.
"What is in this folder, Sarah?" David asked, his voice deadpan, though a muscle twitched violently beneath his right eye.
Sarah pressed her back against the floral armchair, her chest heaving as she tried to pull enough oxygen into her lungs. The defiant facade had completely crumbled, leaving behind the frantic, cornered demeanor of someone whose carefully constructed life of cards was collapsing in slow motion.
"Nothing," Sarah lied, though her voice lacked any conviction. She swallowed hard, her tongue darting out to wet her dry lips. "It's just tax documents. Old financial records from before we merged our accounts. You know how disorganized I get with paperwork."
"The guest room safe doesn't store tax documents, Sarah," David replied coldly. "That safe holds my late father’s estate paperwork and the emergency bearer bonds I set aside for Chloe’s college tuition."
Without waiting for her permission, David tapped the folder icon. A sub-menu popped up, showing a motion-activated video log from the previous month. The timestamp indicated 3:45 AM on a rainy Tuesday while David was fast asleep in the master bedroom down the hall.
The video feed opened in crisp, infrared monochrome. The guest room was dark, illuminated only by the faint green glow of the digital alarm clock on the nightstand. The door clicked open silently. Sarah stepped into the frame, wearing her silk bathrobe. She walked straight to the painting of the coastal landscape hanging on the east wall, swung the canvas aside, and punched a six-digit code into the biometric keypad.
David watched in absolute horror as the heavy steel door of the wall safe swung open. On the screen, Sarah reached inside with a canvas tote bag and began methodically emptying the contents: manila folders, velvet jewelry boxes, and thick envelopes stuffed with cash.
"You're robbing me," David whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "You've been clearing out the accounts while I sleep."
"I was protecting us!" Sarah shrieked suddenly, dropping all pretense of calm as panic finally broke the dam of her restraint. "Your business was struggling last year! I was just diversifying our assets so we wouldn't lose everything to your bad investments! I did it for our future!"
"Those bonds were my father's legacy," David said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. He raised his eyes from the screen, locking a gaze of pure ice onto his wife. "And that doesn't explain why you tortured my daughter."

Sarah stared back at him, her chest heaving, realizing too late that financial theft was only the tip of the iceberg.
