Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The bright afternoon sunlight flooded the cozy living room, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air, but the atmosphere inside was frigid.
Chloe stood in the center of the rug, her long dark hair falling in messy waves over her light purple hoodie. She wore faded jeans, and her hands were clenched tightly at her sides as she glared directly at her parents. Her chest rose and fell with heavy, measured breaths, betraying a deep, suppressed fury that had been building for months.
"Dad, she changes when you leave," Chloe said, her voice sharp, trembling slightly with the weight of unexpressed exhaustion.
David, a middle-aged Caucasian man with short brown hair and a crisp blue button-down shirt, narrowed his eyes. His expression hardened instantly into a stern, defensive mask. He shifted his weight, crossing his arms over his chest.
Sarah, a middle-aged Caucasian woman with blonde hair, wearing a white shirt and a beige cardigan, immediately threw her hands up defensively.
"That’s not true," Sarah snapped, her tone defensive and laced with a defensive edge that felt entirely too rehearsed. "You are twisting things again, Chloe. You always exaggerate."
"I am not exaggerating!" Chloe fired back, taking a step forward. "You act like a completely different person the second he walks out that front door for work! You scream at me, you threaten me, and then you just pretend everything is fine!"
"Enough, Chloe," David interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "Your mother does not do that. You need to stop manufacturing drama."
"Look at me!" Chloe pleaded, her voice cracking. "Why won't you ever believe me over her?"
David ignored the plea entirely. Without breaking eye contact with his daughter, his right hand reached out to the side table. His fingers brushed against the smooth, cold glass of a tablet showing home security camera controls.
"The camera recorded everything," David said coldly.

Sarah froze, the color draining entirely from her face. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic as David’s finger tapped the screen to load the file.
