Chapter 14 - Smoke on the Porch

A thick, greyish-white plume of dense chemical smoke began to billow upward past the front window, obscuring the bright afternoon sunlight and casting an eerie, monochromatic pall over the living room.
"Get down!" David shouted, abandoning the front door as he sprinted across the hardwood floor toward his daughter. He grabbed Chloe by the shoulders, pulling her down flat against the patterned area rug and shielding her body with his own broad frame.
"What is that? What are they doing?" Chloe coughed, her eyes stinging instantly as the faint, acrid smell of industrial tear gas began to seep through the splintered cracks around the front door frame.
Sarah screamed, dropping to her hands and knees near the floral armchair, gagging as the chemical vapor hit her lungs. The pristine, controlled atmosphere of the suburban living room was shattered into absolute chaos, filled with the sharp stench of burning polymer and the frantic sound of their own ragged breathing.
"They're trying to flush us out!" David yelled over the mounting panic, his own throat burning as he pulled the hem of his blue button-down shirt up over his nose and mouth. "Stay low! Crawl toward the back kitchen exit!"
Through the thickening haze of smoke, the heavy front window cracked sharply under the sudden, intense heat of a secondary incendiary device left on the porch. Shards of glass rained down onto the welcome mat with a loud, tinkling crash, and a tongue of orange flame licked lazily against the exterior window frame.
"The house is on fire!" Sarah screamed hysterically, abandoning all self-preservation as she scrambled blindly toward the kitchen hallway on all fours, her blonde hair dragging through the ash and debris scattered across the floor.
"Chloe, take my hand!" David commanded, his voice strained and cracking through the fabric pressed against his face. He grabbed his daughter’s wrist, pulling her forward through the choking fog toward the rear sliding glass door that led out to the back patio.
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder as two police cruisers and a municipal fire truck rounded the corner of the suburban street, their flashing red and blue lights painting the smoke-filled interior of the house in surreal, flickering shades of crimson and azure.
David kicked the sliding patio glass open with a heavy boot, shattering the safety pane and sending a cool, refreshing rush of clean outdoor air sweeping into the suffocating kitchen. He pushed Chloe out onto the grass first, following closely behind her while keeping a protective arm around her shoulders.
Sarah crawled out behind them, collapsing onto the green lawn near the patio table, coughing violently and clutching her chest as she gasped for oxygen.
David turned around, his eyes burning as he watched thick black smoke billow out from the front window of his home. Sirens squealed to a sudden halt at the curb, and uniformed police officers poured out of their cruisers, weapons drawn, shouting commands as they converged on the burning property.

Amidst the flashing lights and the roaring sirens, a lone police detective stepped forward, his eyes scanning the chaotic scene before fixing his gaze directly on David, Sarah, and Chloe standing on the lawn.
